HAMILTON — Hamilton resident Karen Reimer believes that “journalism and free press are the basic foundations of our society and our freedom.”

A journalism major at Miami University, Reimer was awarded the James M. Cox Foundation Scholarship.

The $2,500 scholarship was established to allow Cox Newspapers to recognize and encourage bright and talented college students who have demonstrated an interest in a media career.

“News is people,” said Reimer, section editor of the Miami Hamilton student newspaper, The Hamilton Harrier. “The responsibility of the newspaper in a community is to bring the people in that community together, to inform them and to draw connections between them.”

A graduate of Badin High School, Reimer believes that the “newspaper provides a forum for public discourse on issues, and is a window into aspects and people in our communities we would not have otherwise come into contact with. Stories about the local food bank or the community historical society help bring people together. The lack of a local newspaper means the loss of the community aspect of a community.”

“The Hamilton JournalNews is proud to be able to support Karen Reimer in her college endeavors,” said Edwina Blackwell Clark, publisher of the Hamilton JournalNews. “Getting an education is so important, and if we can do something to support that, we are more than happy to.

“Plus this scholarship allows us to give back to this community, which has so generously supported us. This is one way for us to help local high-potential youth realize their dream.”
