HAMILTON — The owner of a popular Fairfield business plans to open a second location in Hamilton early next month.

Sherry Armstead, owner of Art On Symmes, expects to get the keys for Art Off Symmes at 228 High St. this Friday and work for two weeks to stock the 800-square-foot, 1800s-era Mercantile building storefront with a wide variety of art and fine crafts.

“It’s going to be the ideal spot for somebody who works downtown to run in for a quick gift,” she said.

The new storefront will offer some of the same kind of items available at Art on Symmes, which Armstead opened in 2002. The eclectic gallery represents more than 400 artists, Armstead said.

Ninety-nine percent of all art shown in the store is American made and 35 percent comes from regional artists. The new store also will sell decorative “art clothing,” Armstead said.

“We’ve got such unique things,” she said. “You can literally come in here and fulfill everyone on your shopping list with items for infants through adults, most of it very affordably priced.”

The store also will offer service-oriented amenities not seen in “big box” stores, such as gift wrapping at no cost and point-of-purchase shipping, she said.

Several Hamilton leaders, including some from the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, helped persuade Armstead that a new location could be good for her business and the city’s economy.

When Armstead mentioned that many of her customers came from Hamilton, Gerry Hammond, a Hamilton Welcome Center volunteer who shopped at Art on Symmes since it opened encouraged her to open a second satellite location there.

“I thought it would be a great shop to have in the middle of downtown,” Hammond said. “This could be a spark to get several things going. It’s a great location and she has beautiful things in a lot of different price ranges.”
