DAYTON — Many wives think their husbands are hot, but Cathy Morningstar wants everyone to know her husband, broadcaster and Edgewood graduate Don Hammond, is hot.
That’s why she entered him in Redbook’s Hottest Husband contest.
Hammond is an anchor at WKEF, Dayton’s ABC affiliate, and is a 1974 graduate of Edgewood High School. He spoke at Edgewood’s 2009 commencement ceremony.
The whole affair started when Morningstar, who works in promotions at WKEF, began snapping pictures of Hammond while he was in the basement of their Dayton home, installing a new bathroom. When he asked what she was doing, she replied, “Oh, just some before and after shots.”
The next thing Hammond knew, Morningstar was telling him, “By the way, you’re a finalist in the hot husbands contest.”
Morningstar snapped the shots because she had seen a previous Hottest Husbands winner, and thought “Don’s better looking than that guy.”
Although his initial reaction was “Say it isn’t so,” Hammond is now amused and flattered by the attention.
“It’s kind of a superficial thing for me, but it’s a fun thing especially at my age,” said Hammond, 53. “I’ll just relax, enjoy and go with it.”
When asked what makes her husband hot, Morningstar said, “He’s really got big muscles.”
But there’s more to Hammond than just physique. A single mom with three kids, Morningstar had sworn off men after coming out of a bad relationship, but Hammond changed her mind. The couple have been married since 2005.
