MIDDLETOWN — Members of the group No Saints No Saviors readily admit they don’t look much like the Allman Brothers Band. But by all accounts they sound just like the Allman Brothers Band.

That’s why No Saints No Saviors plays Wednesday at the final Legends of Rock concert this year. The concert series books tribute bands which try to look and sound like a particular group. Bob Nave, the keyboard player for No Saints No Saviors, balks at the label “tribute band.”

“It’s really not that we try to mimic the Allman Brothers’ look. We just play the music,” said Nave, formerly of the Oxford-based band The Lemon Pipers, who had a number one hit in 1968 with “Green Tambourine.”

A green tambourine probably won’t be much in evidence Wednesday, but here’s what will be played: Nave on Hammond Organ, Fairfield Twp.-based guitarist Sonny Moorman on guitar, Pete Snow also on guitar, Dave Fair and Tom Hammann on drums, and Chris Perreault on bass.

The group first formed in 2007, on the 35th anniversary of the death of guitarist Duane Allman. “We got the guys together at Shady O’Grady’s in Loveland. It was sloppy, but the energy level was there,” Nave said.

What was also there was convenience. Since the musicians all played in other bands, it was easy to get together on Mondays, when the players didn’t have any other shows.

The group’s set list including such songs as “Whipping Post,” and “Blue Sky.”

Moorman said the Allman Brothers Band would “certainly be among my favorites. The idea that I get to play that music is great. These guys really know how to play together. Bob Nave is a real Hammond organ player and it’s not just a synth with an organ patch,” Moorman said.

Nave added, “People say we’re the most authentic Allman Brothers Band.”
The free show begins at 5:30 p.m. at Governor’s Square Park at Broad Street and Central Avenue. This performance is a makeup date for when the July 20 performance was rained out. The openers will be the Miami Valley Idol 3 finalists with the band the Vinyl Junkies.
