COLUMBUS — Ohio’s unemployment rate dipped to 10.8 percent in August, down from 11.2 percent in July, as fewer Ohioans sought jobs, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported on Friday, Sept. 18.
The decline came as Ohio’s nonfarm employment dropped by 30,100 over the month, from 5,127,400 in July to 5,097,300 in August.
“A decrease in Ohio’s labor force was a primary factor in (the) drop of the August unemployment rate,” ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin said in a press release. “The unemployment rate declined as the number of service-providing and goods-providing jobs decreased and fewer Ohioans were actively seeking work.”
Before the August report, the unemployment rate had increased for 11 straight months.
In August the number of unemployed workers was 641,000, down from 666,000 in July. During the past 12 months, the number of unemployed has gone up by 239,000 from 402,000.
The August unemployment rate was more than four points higher than the 6.7 percent rate in August 2008.
Nationally, the August unemployment rate was 9.7 percent, up from 9.4 percent in July.
