Elan, NRG Energy, Boeing are big movers

NEW YORK — Stocks that moved substantially or traded heavily Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market:

NYSE:

Elan Corp., up 60 cents at $7.60

Johnson&Johnson said it will take an 18.4 percent stake in the Ireland-based drug developer with a $1 billion investment.

NRG Energy Inc., down $1.25 at $24.80

Exelon Corp. sweetened its hostile takeover bid for the company to $8 billion in stock, citing newly identified cost savings.

Rite Aid Corp., down 19 cents at $1.35

The nation's third-largest pharmacy chain by locations said June same-store sales fell 0.6 percent, while total sales fell 2.5 percent.

Boeing Co., down $1.40 at $40.83

An analyst cut his estimates of 787 jetliner deliveries, but said the delay will allow Boeing to make improvements.

NASDAQ:

TiVo Inc., down $1.68 at $9.09

A federal appeals court said Dish satellite TV customers can still use their digital video recorders while a patent battle continues.

Evergreen Solar Inc., up 24 cents at $2.39

The company, which makes silicon wafers for solar panels, was upgraded on smooth operations at a new facility.

Sepracor Inc., down $3.22 at $14.67

Its depression drug candidate failed in a clinical trial, while other studies were stopped by the Food and Drug Administration.

Discovery Laboratories Inc., down 54 cents at 51 cents

The company said a Food and Drug Administration review standard places the approval of respiratory drug candidate Surfaxin in doubt.
