Graeter’s, Braxton Brewing team up for new beer-inspired ice cream

Graeter’s and Braxton Brewing Company have switched things up, going from ice cream-inspired beers to beer-inspired ice cream.

The new sweet treat is Stout & Pretzels ice cream, an homage to Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. The new variety, which is available in downtown Cincinnati at this weekend’s annual celebration, doesn’t taste like beer by and of itself, but is inspired by Braxton’s Dead Blow Tropical Stout.

“You taste some maltiness, some richness,” Braxton’s Jonathan Gandolf told our media partner, WCPO. “This beer’s brewed with dates, so they use some figs in the ice cream, and then you’ve got some chocolate-covered pretzels, which we all know pretzels pair great with beer.”

Braxton and Graeter’s previously joined forces to create two ice cream-inspired beers: Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Milk Stout and Blueberry Pie Brown Ale.

Gandolf said Braxton’s head brewer worked with Bob Graeter, the ice cream company’s chief of quality assurance, on “market research” into the flavors.

He got to be one of the taste-testers throughout the process.

“I love it,” he told WCPO. “I wasn’t sure what I’d think of it, but I absolutely love it. It’s really rich, really sweet.”

Graeter’s will start selling the new flavor Oct. 1 at its scoop shops and online store while supplies last.
