Free appliance recycling through October in Butler County

County residents who have Freon appliances they want to recycle can do so for free through October, through a program offered by the Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District.

Acceptable appliances include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers.

The county’s program is aimed at recycling the appliances, rather than having them go to a landfill, said Anne Fiehrer Flaig, director of the district.

“Rumpke doesn’t recycle appliances,” she said. “They take your fridge or your freezer, and they put it in a landfill.”

All those metals can be recycled, she said.

Each household can dispose of two similar appliances, for example, up to two refrigerators and two air conditioners.

There’s a financial savings for using the program, she said: To dispose of such appliances under normal circumstances, the owner first must have the Freon removed from the device, at the owner’s cost. Under this program, the refrigerant gas is removed without charge to the owner.
