You may think a comedian who calls himself El Gleno Grande and wears a fake horse costume on stage is a little bit crazy. But what comedian isn’t?
Glenn Singer, or as he is better known as The Horse Guy, will be performing at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts on Fri. Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Singer’s unique style blends visual comedy and a dry delivery with a bit of slapstick comedy in the form of a horse costume.
Singer said some of his idols growing up were Buster Keaton, Emmett Kelly and Johnny Carson. And much of it shows in his onstage performance.
He often brings audience members on the stage, aiding him in his audience warm-ups or making them a part of the act. No one is safe from being pulled on stage or conversed with from the stage.
“For me, the show is simply an interesting and fun way to spend time with the audience while I’m waiting for what’s really going to happen,” said Singer. “The spontaneous interruption. Now. This moment. That’s what my show is about.”
His signature equestrian act, where he developed the name The Horse Guy, spoofs old-timey circus horse acts, complete with pole jumping, horse trotting and a little bit of improvisation.
Singer has been performing his horse act all around the world since 1983, touring with major international festivals as well as playing smaller schools, theatres and universities.
And the horse act seemed to be destiny.
Singer said he used to study mime in New York City about 30 years ago. As part of his warm up each day, he would act the part of a horse from the waist down and the rider from the waist up.
“One night I was watching a Morris Dancing exhibition in Boston and one of the dancers was wearing a hobby horse costume,” said Singer. “He was just dancing, working the illusion of acting the physical part of the horse from the waist down and the rider from the waist up. I was struck by how well that warm up exercise would go with a costume like that.”
So Singer built a costume for himself. He also started getting suggestions from other performers and audience members on how to build his horse act into what it is today.
The show is family-friendly and will have everyone from young children to grandparents laughing hysterically.
