OXFORD — The race for two open seats on the Talawanda school board was hotly contested, with the three candidates separated by mere hundreds of votes.
Mary Jane Roberts and Lois Vollmer were both elected to the board for four-year terms, according to final, unofficial returns from the boards of elections in Butler and Preble counties.
Preliminary results showed Roberts taking home 3,859 votes out of 10,852 total, while Vollmer received 3,580.
Vollmer narrowly edged out John Brosier by 167 votes, with the Reily Twp. native receiving 3,413 votes, according to unofficial results.
Roberts said she was “riding on a cloud” following the close race, thanking district residents for supporting her throughout the campaign.
“I’m excited that we were able to run a very clean person-to-person kind of campaign,” Roberts said. “I intend to be a very good, ethically strong board member who does what is right for the district’s students.”
Vollmer said she did not understand why the race wound up so close. “That usually doesn’t happen,” she said. “I think it showed that voters really did their homework and studied before going to the polls. I’m thankful they had enough confidence to vote me in for a four-year term.”
Vollmer said she plans on doing what she has done for the last two years: representing the people and ensuring that the schools continue along the same excellent track.
Brosier referred to the race as a “humbling experience,” saying he was
amazed at the large number of people who voted for him. He praised Roberts and Vollmer, calling it an honor to have run alongside them.
“I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said. “I think we’re in good hands with the people we’ve got on the board and we’re moving in the right direction. It's been humbling all the way through.”
