LIBERTY TWP. — Voters approved the 3-mill replacement levy for police services provided by the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, according to unofficial results provided Tues., Nov. 3 by the Butler County Board of Elections.
The approval means area residents will be paying an additional $54 per year — per $200,000 in home value — for the 24 deputies and one detective that specifically serve the township. Trustees placed the levy on Tuesday’s ballot in late July.
Residents currently pay approximately $127 per year on police services per $200,000 in home value. If approved, they would pay approximately $184 per year.
The approval also means trustees will have the ability to add one deputy to the local force every other year through the life of the five-year levy, although doing so will not be automatic, rather on an as-needed basis.
Liberty residents last approved an increase in property taxes for police services in 2000, when trustees decided to increase a 1.5-mill levy — approved in 1995 — to 3 mills. Each of the past two levies approved by voters — in 2000 and 2005 — have been renewals, meaning property taxes for police services did not increase. In fact, they decreased over time as Liberty’s population increased with more to share the load.
We also support our fire/police without expecting them to sweep the streets and gutters...lol
