HAMILTON — A 39-year-old Hamilton man was charged early Friday, March 19, in connection with a string of robberies that ended in his arrest after a two-hour police standoff on Sixth Street.
Dennis Ray Cain was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and inducing panic for allegedly robbing Discount Tobacco and Dabbelt’s Super-Ette and then holing himself up in a house at 326 N. Sixth St. on Thursday.
He also was charged with a single count of robbery for allegedly robbing Tom’s Cigar Store, 135 Main St. on Wednesday.
Police began searching for Cain at 3:40 p.m. Thursday when he allegedly barged into Discount Tobacco, 1018 Main St., claiming to have a gun. It’s unknown if he had one. But a clerk at the store did and fired a .380 caliber handgun at him, but missed, police said.
The man left the store empty-handed. Twelve minutes later, the same man walked into Dabbelt’s Super-Ette, 410 N. Third St. brandishing a knife and demanding money.
“Give me all your money. This is a robbery,” the man said, according to clerks at the store.
He allegedly escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and hid in the attic of the Sixth Street home for two hours.
The standoff ended about 6 p.m. when officers fired at least six shots of tear gas into the white, two-story house after Cain refused to negotiate with officers, said Sgt. Craig R. Bucheit.
Cain later was shot in the torso with a beanbag shotgun when he refused to follow police commands to put his hands up, Bucheit said.
“It was tense because the suspect was believed to be armed with a handgun or a knife,” Bucheit said after the standoff.
Morningstarr Scott, 29, who was outside the home when Cain was arrested, was charged with obstructing justice for allegedly misleading officers during the robbery investigations.
Chief Neil Ferdelman released a statement Friday praising responding officers and the residents who provided tips that led to the arrests.
“I am proud of the work by all the officers involved. This was an excellent collaborative effort between the police department’s Patrol Division, Investigation Section, and SWAT Team, and I want to extend our thanks to all the citizens whose tips help(ed) lead to these arrests.”
