HAMILTON — A 39-year-old Hamilton man barricaded himself inside a Sixth Street residence for two hours before being led out in handcuffs by SWAT officers Thursday, March 18.
Police surrounded a house at 326 N. Sixth St. after Dennis Ray Cain was holed up in the attic of the home after allegedly robbing two nearby businesses.
The standoff ended about 6 p.m. when officers fired at least six shots of tear gas into the white, two-story house after the man refused to negotiate with officers, said Sgt. Craig Bucheit.
Cain later was shot in the torso with a beanbag projectile when he refused to follow police commands to put his hands up, Bucheit said.
Cain was booked into the Butler County Jail at 12:41 a.m. today, March 19, on four felony charges: two counts of aggravated robbery, robbery and inducing panic.
The standoff was tense, Bucheit said, because Cain brandished a knife in one robbery and said he had a gun in another so police assumed he was armed.
Police began searching for Cain at 3:40 p.m. Thursday when he allegedly attempted to rob Discount Tobacco, 1018 Main St.
A male suspect in a red shirt and black sweatpants barged into the store claiming to have a gun. It’s unknown if he had one. But a clerk at the store did. The clerk fired at him, but narrowly missed, police said.
The suspect left the store empty-handed. Twelve minutes later, the same man walked into Dabbelt’s Super-Ette, 410 N. Third St., brandishing a knife and demanding money.
“Give me all your money. This is a robbery,” the man said, according to clerks at the store who declined to be identified.
The suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, then stripped off his cap and T-shirt and ran toward the railroad tracks, the clerks said.
Witnesses said he ran in the back door of the Sixth Street home, the residence of a family he’s known since childhood.
Jewell Dean Morgan, who has lived in the home 23 years, was at a neighbor’s home when she said Cain ran inside her home. Morgan went inside to look for Cain, and checked each room, including the bathtub, shouting: “Dennis are you in here? Get your (expletive) out of my house.” Not checking the attic, she went back out, not finding him.
After Morgan was questioned by police, she stood at the corner of Seventh and Buckeye streets sobbing as officers forced open her front door, busted her windows and filled her home with tear gas.
“I’m just glad it turned out to not be real bad,” she said. “I just can’t believe he came to my home. I can’t believe he went into my house.”
Eric Kovack, 63, and his wife, Audrey, 62, watched events unfold from their back porch.
Fumes from the tear gas seeped inside their home and throughout the neighborhood, causing watery eyes and coughing among residents.
“We’ve seen cops going around looking for people around here, but nothing like this” said Audrey Kovack, who has lived in the area seven years.
“We’ve seen a lot, believe me,” Eric Kovack interjected.
According to court records, Cain was last convicted in 2003 of robbery in Butler County Common Pleas Court and was sentenced to prison.
