HAMILTON — A 19-year-old Miami University student has been indicted on felony charges in connection with an alleged sexual assault and struggle with a police officer on Halloween night in Oxford, according to the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office.
Yuyang David Bai, of Naperville, Ill., is facing charges of gross sexual imposition, assault and aggravated robbery, according to the Butler County grand jury report.
Assistant Prosecutor Jason Phillabaum said Wednesday, Nov. 18, the charges stem from an incident at 3:47 a.m. Oct. 31, in a third-floor classroom in Gaskill Hall on Miami’s campus.
“A Miami University officer walked in on a sexual assault in progress,” Phillabaum said.
When the officer tried to stop the alleged assault, a lengthy struggle ensued between Bai and the officer, according to Phillabaum.
When the officer found Bai and a female in the room, Bai said they were looking for a bathroom and said he had to leave, attempting to push the officer aside, according to a Miami police report.
Bai charged at the officer several times and punched, striking him in the face, according to the report. According to the officer’s account, Bai lifted the officer off the ground and slammed him on his back. The two wrestled, according to the report, and Bai attempted to take the officer’s gun.
Bai then broke free and ran from the building, but was apprehended by another officer, according to the report. He was treated at the police station for minor injuries, according to the report.
Bai is free on $25,000 bond.
