A Hamilton man was arrested by the Hamilton SWAT team is scheduled to be arraigned today, Feb. 5, in Hamilton Municipal Court for inducing panic.
Officers were called to 914 Dayton St., about 2:40 p.m. Thursday on a report of Jay Byrd Begley, 40, destroying his house and refusing to come out.
When Begley threatened violence and would not surrender to officers, the Hamilton SWAT team was called. Begley again refused to cooperate and a chemical gas was fired into the residence. He was taken into custody and charged with a first-degree misdemeanor as well as outstanding warrant for robbery out of Hamilton Municipal Court.
Lt. Scott Scrimizzi, SWAT team commander, said Begley has a history of mental issues. Police have had a stand off with him in the past.
Begley is known to collect swords and neighbors feared he might be armed Thursday afternoon, but family members had removed the weapons from the home, Scrimizzi said.
Begley was wanted on a robbery charge for a street robbery that occurred on Jan. 26.
