Funeral services set for slain marine

HAMILTON — Funeral services for Hamilton native Cpl. Joshua Hartzell, who was killed last week at Camp Lejeune, N.C., will be held this weekend in Mount Healthy.

According to the Paul R. Young Funeral Homes Web site, visitation for Joshua Hartzell, 21, will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the funeral home, 7345 Hamilton Ave. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Sunday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m.

Rebecca Lumpkin, Hartzell’s sister, said he will be buried at Venice Cemetery in Ross Twp., located near his mother’s home on Moeller Drive.

Hartzell is a 2006 graduate of Ross High School where he was a wrestler for the Rams. He is the son of Edward Hartzell of South Lebanon and Jeannean Dickhaus of Ross Twp.

Private Jonathan Law, 21, of Nevada, has been formally charged with murder in Hartzell’s slaying, according to Capt. Timothy Patrick, Marine Corps spokesman

According to camp authorities, the Camp Lejeune Provost Marshals Office received a call after 1 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, reporting a disturbance at the French Creek barracks.

Officials arrived on the scene with base emergency medical services to find Law with apparent self-inflicted wounds and Hartzell’s body in the woods across the street from the barracks, according to base officials. An autopsy determined Hartzell died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Hartzell was an electro-optical ordinance repairer with 2nd Maintenance Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

Hartzell, 22, joined the Marine Corps Sept. 5, 2006. His personal awards include the Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
