FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield City Schools Board of Education fired two custodians Thursday, Nov. 19, one for alleged excessive use of the Internet and one for allegedly throwing away school property.

According to his file, Dale Milar, a third-shift custodian at Fairfield Middle School, was fired for throwing away three hole punchers and taking cans of soda from a teacher’s room, according to a school report.

In the investigative report, the Fairfield resident said he did not want to clean up the little dots created by the punchers, so he threw them away. After denying the soda theft, he was caught on video holding a can, and another was found on his cleaning cart in a closet. Police reports for criminal mischief and theft were filed, according to district officials. He was given the option of resigning, but did not submit a letter of resignation and was fired for dishonesty, neglect of duty, failure of good behavior and malfeasance, according to the district.

Fairfield Intermediate School head custodian Bill York of Hamilton was fired after an investigation into complaints of inefficiency resulted in the discovery of an “inordinate amount of usage of the Internet,” according to district records.

From Aug. 7 through Nov. 13, he spent 59 hours, or a week and a half of work time, surfing the Internet.Reports indicate the two sites he mainly visited were the Journal-News.com and WCPO.

Officials also reported he spent seven hours of work time sending nonwork e-mail to another employee, including one that stated he was hiding to be “out of site, out of mind.”

He was hired in October of 1986, according to records. He was given the option to resign to avoid being fired in a public meeting. The board fired him effective Nov. 19 for inefficiency, neglect of duty, failure of good behavior and violation of the district technology and communication services policy.
