FAIRFIELD — A suspected illegal immigrant is jailed on felony forgery charges following a weeklong investigation into counterfeit ID cards.

Sheriff Richard K. Jones announced Friday, Feb. 5, that Abraham Diaz-Carmona, 24, was arrested in Fairfield on eight counts of forgery, a fifth-degree felony.

Diaz-Carmona, who is believed to have been living in West Chester Twp., was allegedly manufacturing fictitious drivers’ licenses, Social Security cards and green cards on demand for clients.

According to the sheriff’s office, Diaz-Carmona would deliver the counterfeit documents within an hour of receiving photos and names via text message.

Undercover deputies communicated with the suspect though text messages and arranged a meeting in Fairfield on Friday afternoon. When he was stopped by marked units, Diaz-Carmona reportedly had the counterfeit documents deputies ordered in his possession, but also had three additional counterfeit documents for other parties.

Deputies said Diaz-Carmona initially claimed his name was Johan Altanar-Soriano, but fingerprints from a prior arrest in Colorado helped investigators learn his true identity.

Diaz-Carmona was booked into the Butler County jail at 4:20 p.m. Friday. Bond for the eight forgery charges is a combined $17,541, though jail staff said he is currently under an immigration holder. Even if he was able to pay the bond, he would not be able to leave custody.

Diaz-Carmona will be arraigned in Fairfield Municipal Court, though a court date has not yet been set. He is scheduled for an interview with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to determine his nationality and could face deportation is he is found to be living in the United States illegally, according to officials.
