HAMILTON — The Lindenwald man who died in a fire Saturday, Jan. 2, perished because of smoke inhalation.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
The cause of death for 62-year-old Edward Richardson was carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Debbie Lacey, investigator for the Butler County Coroner’s Office.
Richardson also suffered second-degree burns.
Lacey said Richardson was found in the kitchen of his home, at 2141 Benninghofen Ave. The fire was located primarily in the living room area.
Alcohol was present in Richardson’s system at the time of his death, but pending toxicology tests, the amount is unknown, Lacey said.
Hamilton Deputy Fire Chief Bob Harmon said there doesn’t appear to be anything suspicious about the blaze.
Neighbors reported the fire shortly before 6 p.m. Four engines, one medic unit and one tower truck responded, and firefighters were on the scene for about three hours, fire officials said.
The fire also damaged the siding on the house next door.
The first floor of Richardson’s two-story home was destroyed in the blaze. Damage to the structure was estimated at $75,000, according to fire officials.
