CINCINNATI — A Hamilton man has been sentenced to prison for sending a series of e-mails last fall to a Cincinnati television station and the FBI threatening to blow up landmarks and to kill President Bush.
Frederick Purvis, 43, formerly of Southwood Drive, was arrested Nov. 20, 2008 at an Erlanger, Ky. hotel on federal felony charges of making a bomb threat and making a false terrorist threat.
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Purvis was sentenced in the U.S. District County Southern District in Cincinnati by Judge Susan J. Dlott to 30 months in jail.
According to court records, Purvis pleaded guilty in June to one count of making a bomb threat in the Southern District of Ohio and one count of making a bomb threat in the Eastern District of Kentucky.
In the plea agreement, Purvis signed with both districts, he admitted that he drove to a hotel in Fairfield on Nov. 13, 2008, logged onto the Internet and created an e-mail account under a fake name. Purvis used the account to send an e-mail to the FBI Web site claiming that he had planted bombs in seven locations and that the bombs would explode over the upcoming weekend, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
Purvis claimed he had placed bombs at Paul Brown Stadium, the Brent Spence Bridge, the Big Mac Bridge, the Old Coney Bridge, the Indiana Kentucky Bridge near Argosy Casino, Argosy Casino and the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport.
Purvis admitted that on Nov. 14, he checked into a hotel in Erlanger, Ky., created another e-mail account and sent an e-mail to the Transportation Security Administration Contact Center. It claimed that he had placed a bomb at the airport and that it would explode between Nov. 15-19.
In 2003, Purvis was convicted in Hamilton County on drug charges. He was convicted in 2001 in Hamilton Municipal Court of making false alarms and inducing panic.
