MIAMISBURG — Bond for Cody Wayne Henderson of Middletown, accused of murder in the death of his stepfather last weekend, was set at $1 million Thursday, Oct. 22, in city Municipal Court .

Henderson, 19, was arraigned by acting Judge Thomas Liptock on charges of aggravated murder, aggravated assault, felonious assault and tampering with evidence in the slaying of Charles Zan II, 45, according to court records.

Miamisburg police said Henderson stabbed Zan more than 40 times on Oct. 17.

A preliminary hearing is Oct. 29 in municipal court for Henderson, who remains in the Montgomery County Jail. Investigators said Zan was killed about 6 a.m. in his studio apartment at the Guest Suites Apartments, Apt. 19, 7123 Springboro Pike. His wife, Pandora, called for help, saying she had been knocked to the ground and blacked out.

Police Capt. Ron Hess said Thursday that authorities are continuing to investigate the killing and have executed search warrants at multiple locations.

Investigators have not released a motive for the killing.

A police incident report revealed that investigators found no signs of forced entry, but that the screen of a window near the front door had been cut on the top, bottom and the left side, which would allow it to be peeled back. The window was fully open, the report said.

Officers interviewed several of Zan’s neighbors, but none reported hearing or seeing anything suspicious.

Police issued no formal news releases about the killing, but have provided some details about the incident to local media when asked.

Hess said the public was not in danger in the time between when the slaying occurred and when Henderson was arrested early Tuesday at a Miamisburg hotel.
