Source: Argument led to deadly Thanksgiving Day shooting in Louisville

UPDATE @ 10:01 p.m.: The (Louisville) Courier-Journal is reporting that according to a source familiar with the investigation, Louisville Metro Police believe the shootings may have stemmed from an argument that erupted after a man in his 60s bumped into the motorcycle of a man in his 20s who had a gun.

The source said that once one person was shot, other people nearby pulled out guns to retaliate.

Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said the victims — now reported to be four and not six, as reported earlier in the day — are expected to survive. Two were taken by ambulance and two were taken by private cars to hospitals.

The deaths push Louisville’s homicide total for the year to 112, which the Courier-Journal reports is the record citywide.

UPDATE @ 7:30 p.m.: The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have joined the investigation into the shootings at a Louisville, Ky., park during the annual "Juice Bowl" youth football game, media outlets are reporting.

According to WAVE-TV and other media reports, the gunmen got away and the motive for the shootings was unclear, according to Dwight Mitchell, a Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman.

The names and ages of the two male fatalities have not been made public.

FIRST REPORT

Two of at least six people shot at an annual football game at a park in Louisville, Ky., are dead, police said.

Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a report of multiple shootings at Shawnee Park on Thursday afternoon, according to the Associated Press and CBS affiliate WLKY-TV.

The injuries among those taken to University Hospital are not considered life threatening.

According to those reports from those and other media outlets, the shootings occurred about 200 yards from the annual Juice Bowl football games, which were attended by thousands as well as Mayor Greg Fisher.

The mayor was never in danger, said his spokesman Chris Poynter, who notes that the mayor attends the event every year.

WLKY-TV is reporting that in a Facebook video posted by one of the attendees of the event, at least 20 shots are heard. The video begins with a man grilling in the park with friends. Shots are heard shortly after.

Youth games had just ended and two women’s teams were in the middle of a flag football game when shots were fired. Men’s games were canceled.
