Police say Colerain mass shooting victim lied about being pregnant

Colerain Twp. police now believe that that a female shooting victim at a gender reveal party on July 8 lied about losing her unborn child.

The unsolved mass shooting left one woman dead and eight others injured, including three children.

Jim Love of the Colerain Twp. Police Dept. said detectives have been busy developing leads and following up on evidence that has been collected in the shooting in the 9900 block of Capstan Avenue in Colerain.

But police now believe Cheyanne Willis, who was shot in the leg at a shower in her unborn baby’s honor, was not truthful about losing an unborn child, and appears to not have been pregnant.

Love said police are now certain that “Willis was not pregnant,” and have wasted time following up on information that was incorrect. Willis could also be facing charges regarding providing false information to police, Love said.

He added that detectives are following up on tips and evidence and will continue to work the case “to make something break.”

Autum Garrett, 22, of Huntington, Ind., suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died before first responders arrived on the scene July 8. Willis was the other adult victim shot and three children ages 8, 6 and 2, were sent to Cincinnati Children’s hospital with non-life threatening injuries from gunshot wounds.

Gender reveal parties are events at which expectant parents announce the gender of their unborn child.

A $10,000 reward has been put up by an anonymous donor for information leading to the arrest of people involved in the mass shooting.

Colerain resident Sanford Dullah was near Capstan Drive on Monday afternoon, and he was concerned about the alleged fabrication told to police by Willis.

“I have concerns if there was a baby in the first place and what else could she be lying about?” Dullah said, adding that he was also concerned that witnesses providing false information have wasted the time of law enforcement during the investigation.

The Cincinnati Drug Enforcement Administration, Ohio Attorney General’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations, United States Marshal’s Service, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are combining efforts with the Colerain Twp. police in the investigation.
