Bond set for suspect in drive-through robberies, shooting

A Hamilton man who police call a “dangerous criminal” will be back in court next week after allegedly committing four armed robberies and a shooting in just two weeks.

Robert D. Dezarn, 28, of Prytania Avenue, was arrested around 9 p.m. Tuesday at East Avenue and Grand Boulevard and charged with four counts of aggravated robbery and one count of felonious assault, police said.

Dezarn was arraigned this morning in Hamilton Municipal Court. Bond was set at $378,000. His next court date is a preliminary hearing scheduled for 8 a.m. next Tuesday.

He allegedly entered Speedy’s Drive Thru, 809 N. 2nd St., around 9:10 p.m. Monday, brandishing a handgun and demanding money. He then shot a clerk in the stomach and fled without taking any money, police said.

Dezarn made off with cash from the register during three previous robberies, including Dec. 8 at Minnick’s Drive-Thru on Brookwood Avenue, Dec. 17 at Minnick’s Drive-Thru on East Avenue and Dec. 19 at BP Oil on Main Street.

The Dec. 8 robbery was featured by Crime Stoppers, which generated a tip that aided in Tuesday night’s capture and arrest, police said.

“I’m extremely proud of the hard work and determination shown by our officers and detectives that resulted in taking this dangerous criminal off the street,” said Hamilton police Capt. Craig Bucheit. “Our hard work coupled with help from the community and our partners at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office succeeded in making this Christmas holiday safer for all.”

In addition to this week’s arrest, Dezarn also faces charges from previous incidents, including one count of obstructing official business and one count of resisting arrest.

Court records show other prior arrests, which stretch back to 2006, include assault, theft and criminal trespass.
