2 arrested in string of Oxford burglaries

It is not uncommon for the Oxford Police Department to receive a rash of burglary reports in January when Miami University students return for spring semester to find burglars have struck their residences during the break.

This past week, however, detectives were calling students to tell them they had recovered property taken before the owners even knew it had been stolen.

After a high number of burglary and attempted burglary reports, Oxford Police said they started a concentrated investigation.

Their efforts paid off last week after two people were arrested for a string of burglaries, mostly centered on Miami student residences since early December.

“Detectives identified two suspects and questioning led to information that they were responsible for numerous burglaries in the Oxford area,” said Oxford Police Sgt. Jon Varley.

Sierra Briscoe, 19, of Hamilton, and Forrest J. Hagedorn, 22, of Verona, Ky., are being held in Butler County Jail on burglary charges.

Both were charged with one count as of Monday, but more charges may be added as more victims identify their property, according to Varley.

“The investigation is ongoing and we do expect more charges,” he said.

Property recovered in the investigation was found as a result of search warrants, and many of the items were also recovered at pawn shops.

Varley said detectives contacted some property owners to ask them to visit the police station to identify their items — some even before they were aware it had been taken.
