Company lays off 99, shuts down Middletown operations

UPDATE, Nov. 1:

AK Steel spokeswoman Lisa Jester told this news outlet that while the company does not comment on the details of its contractual relationships with vendors, it can confirm that part of the work that TMS is performing is moving to another contractor.

“It is our understanding that the new contractor is or will be interviewing current TMS employees for possible employment,” Jester said. “The remainder of the work will be done internally by AK Steel by hiring additional employees.”

Officials with TMS International declined to provide comment.

INITIAL REPORT, Oct. 31:

TMS International in Middletown is set to layoff 99 employees as it shuts down operations.

As required by law, the company notified the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services’ Office of Workforce Development that it is shutting down its operations at AK Steel’s facility at 3018 East Oxford State Road, effective Jan. 1.

“All employees at the facility will be impacted and this closing is expected to be permanent,” John Ponzuric, director of human resources at TMS International, said in a letter sent Monday to ODJFS. “Bumping rights to other jobs or locations do not exist.”

TMS International is a provider of on-site, industrial steel mill services for steelmakers worldwide. It operates 90 locations in 25 states and 14 countries.

The Middletown layoffs are the result of the expiration of TMS’ commercial contract with AK Steel, Ponzuric said.

All affected employees have been notified, he said.
