We asked several companies and job-finding experts the most common mistakes they see people make at job fairs.

Here’s what they had to say and their advice on how to avoid such missteps:

1. Don’t forget that first impression

“Often times, they look like they rolled out of bed, or dress too provocative. Classy, tasteful dress attire is noticed.” Ashley Caudill, HR specialist for JBM Envelope Co.

2. Don’t just go for the “freebies”

In my opinion, candidates approach sheepishly looking at the “goodies” on the table. I would recommend they approach with confidence and enthusiasm to show interest in what is being offered and to show they are sure of themselves.” — Tim Morrison, quality system coordinator, INX International Ink Co.

3. Don’t come empty-handed

“I would say the biggest mistake is coming unprepared…. be ready to possibly be interviewed, and have a copy of your resume. Even if the company makes you apply online, leaving your resume lets you leave them something to remember you by. I have seen a number of employers walk out with resumes with notes on them after job fair that we host.” — Matt Fetty, director, OhioMeansJobs-Warren County

4. Don’t forget to do your research

“The most common mistake I see is job seekers coming unprepared. … I would suggest researching the company and know a few facts about them so when you talk with the hiring manager they’ll know you have done some research.” — Melissa O’Brien, a business services liaison with OhioMeansJobs-Butler County

5. Don’t forget to sell yourself
