Fairfield police investigating death of 1-month-old infant

Fairfield police and the Butler County coroner are investigating the death of an infant early Tuesday.

The one-month-old boy was found not breathing in an apartment in the 1500 block of Gelhot Drive at 4:34 a.m., Fairfield Police Officer Doug Day said.

The infant was transported to Mercy Hospital-Fairfield, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

A man called dispatchers saying, “I got a real emergency.”

He said his little cousin was not breathing.

“And he is bleeding out of his nose,” the man told dispatchers.

People crying and screaming can be heard in the background of the phone call.

The caller told dispatchers that someone was doing CPR on the child before going outside to flag down emergency responders.

A second call was placed to 911 in the same incident. In that call, a woman told dispatchers her one-month-old grandson wasn’t breathing.

Police have not yet released the identities of the mother or the child.
