Butler County sex offenders under watch during trick or treat

Tonight, as little goblins hit the street for trick or treat, Butler County Sheriff’s deputies will be assigned to patrol neighborhoods where registered sex offenders live.

As of Monday, there were 426 registered sex offenders in Butler County, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Not going to tell how many will be out there or how we are going to do it, but we will be watching them to keep everyone safe,” Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.

Many people also receive notification when a registered sex offender moves into their neighborhood.

“People have a certain degree of responsibility to know where (registered sex offenders) are in their neighborhoods,” Jones said. “And I encourage people to get the information not just on Halloween but every day.”

Children are also welcome to trick or treat at the sheriff’s office, 705 Hanover St. in Hamilton, from 5 to 7 p.m. today.

There will be plenty of candy as well as equipment on display, the sheriff said.

“Unfortunately, some areas are not safe for children to go house to house. We will have good candy and a safe place for the kids,” Jones said.
