Walgreens reports stronger June sales

Walgreens, which operates more than two dozen drugstores in the Dayton area, reported Wednesday that its June sales totaled $6.04 billion, up 6.8 percent from $5.65 billion in June 2010.

Sales in comparable stores, or those open at least a year, increased 4.8 percent. Customer traffic in comparable stores increased 1.3 percent. Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 5 percent in June, the company said.

June pharmacy sales increased 6.2 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 4.9 percent, the company said.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $36.11 billion, an increase of 7.8 percent from $33.50 billion in 2010. Fiscal 2011 year-to-date sales for the 10 months were $60.25 billion, up 7.2 percent from $56.20 billion in fiscal 2010, the company said.

Walgreens said it opened 15 stores during June, including two relocations, acquired seven stores and closed one for a net increase of 19 stores in the month.
