SunCoke to move headquarters to Chicago

Staff Report

SunCoke Energy is in talks to move its headquarters from Knoxville, Tenn., to suburban Chicago next year when it becomes independent of petroleum refiner Sunoco Inc.

The metallurgical coke manufacturing company said Thursday, Sept. 23, a the new location would help it better serve international steel manufacturers and pursue growth opportunities. The final decision hinges on negotiations under way with Illinois and local officials.

SunCoke said many of its 90 employees at the Knoxville offices will be offered an opportunity to relocate. It also plans to add 30 employees when it becomes independent.

SunCoke is currently constructing a new $360 million coke oven facility in Middletown near the Monroe border. Once complete, the facility off of Yankee Road will supply coke and energy to AK Steel. Company officials said the plant is on schedule to be in operation by September 2011.

Sunoco announced plans to spin off SunCoke Energy earlier this year to boost the value of its shares. The shift is expected to be completed in the first half of 2011.

Sunoco’s shares closed down 40 cents at $33.70.
