HAMILTON — SMART Papers will lay off at least 45 more workers at its Hamilton plant.

According to a filing with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services posted Aug. 20, the layoffs will be completed by Oct. 18. The employment loss is expected to be permanent, although the company said it does not intend to shut down the plant.

SMART Papers officials cited lower sales volumes as a result of economic conditions as the reason behind the layoffs, according to the filing.

Employees were notified of the layoffs on Aug. 19.

Vic Weisbrod, president of the United Steelworks of America Local 1967, said Thursday that the company indicated to workers that 52 hourly employees would be cut.

The layoffs may not follow seniority in the rank and file. Weisbrod said the process is complicated and workers will find out Monday, Aug. 31, who will be in the layoff pool and who will be displaced from their current positions.

“This is the third time since last October that we’re doing this,” said Weisbrod, whose wife Berneda was laid off in May after 34 years with the company. “The uncertainty is stressful.”

There are 190 active union members at SMART, not counting employees who are on short-term and long-term disability, according to Weisbrod.

The local paper manufacturer, located at 601 North B Street in Hamilton, laid off about 240 workers in May. At that time, company officials indicated that employment levels may change.

The May cuts were in response to lower production levels as SMART Papers sold several of its paper lines to Mohawk Fine Papers, which also has a plant in Hamilton.

Chairman Tim Needham and President and Chief Operating Officer Dan Maheu did not return calls seeking comment.
