HAMILTON — A local bakery is finding its profits on the rise with the opening of its third location.
Ross Bakery opened the newest location at 1141 Central Ave. late last year. The business sells doughnuts, pastries and bread made daily. Pastries include glazed rounds, filled rounds, danishes, elephant ears, bow ties, fritters, honey buns, long johns and pretzels.
Hamilton resident Harry Combs, who purchased the now 40-year-old business in 2006, said what is making the new location profitable is the same thing that helps the other two locations: repeat business from faithful customers.
“We see the same faces at all three of our locations every day ... and of course they refer people and we’re always seeing new faces, too,” said Combs.
Ross Bakery also creates breads, cakes and pies, plus specialty cookies with logos, school colors and holiday designs.
The business employs 12 people, two of whom work at the new Central Avenue location.
All items are made fresh each morning at the bakery’s Eaton Avenue kitchen by master baker Chuck Basler and Combs’ two children, Matt Combs and Melissa Mahan.
Combs said major retail chains have not hurt his business.
“It’s a different product,” Combs said. “If you buy store-bought doughnuts, they’re all perfectly round and the same size. Our products are all handmade. Each one is unique in itself.
“I’ve had people tell us we have the biggest and the best doughnuts in the universe.”
Steve Cain of Hamilton, a customer of Ross Bakery’s other locations for many years, said the new location makes it convenient for him to pick up some cake doughnuts during work hours.
“Try to find a better doughnut in town. You can’t,” Cain said.
Hours are 4:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
