Local IKEA looks to solar energy

WEST CHESTER — IKEA will add solar panels to its store here as well as five other locations, the Swedish home furnishings retailer said.

IKEA hopes to install panels this spring and conclude the work in the fall, if it receives the necessary permits, executives said.

Crews will outfit the Butler County store, which opened in 2008, with 4,450 panels. The panels will be capable of generating 1.3 million kilowatt hours per year, enough to power 111 homes over a year, IKEA executives said.

The company said it also will upgrade two stores each in Maryland and Pennsylvania, and its U.S. headquarters in Conshohocken, Pa.

Mike Ward, president of IKEA’s U.S. operation, said adding solar energy matches the company’s commitment to sustainable building practices.

“We are open to considering other opportunities and technologies, too,” Ward said.
