Home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc. will hire 150 seasonal and part-time employees for its Dayton area stores in anticipation of the spring season.
The hires are among 70,000 seasonal hires nationally, the company announced Thursday. The number is about the same as last year, the company said. The hires will be spread over stores in Trotwood, Miamisburg, Springfield, Fairborn, Centerville, and Piqua, said Jen King of Home Depot.
While seasonal jobs typically last 120 days, in 2011 about half of seasonal workers were kept on as cashiers, sales, lot and garden staffers. Home Depot employs about 300,000 workers overall.
“As far as the positions, we always prefer strong retail customer service experience. If an individual applies who has a strong background in a certain area, such as lawn and garden, the store will leverage that expertise in the appropriate store department,” King said. “If we find great people, we want them to stay on.”
King said the company does not release its standard wages, but said that it varies based on the market, experience and position.
Applicants can apply online at careers.homedepot.com, she said.
Home-goods sellers are facing cautious consumer spending and a prolonged weak housing market, but the spring season is the busiest at Home Depot. They’ve had to adjust to fewer consumers making large-scale home renovations by cutting costs and improving services such as online shopping and customer service.
But results are slowly improving. Home Depot Inc.’s net income for the third-quarter ended Oct. 30 rose 12 percent while revenue edged up 4 percent to $17.33 billion from $16.6 billion last year.
