Members of the Edison Materials Technology Center voted Thursday to end the organization’s operations by the end of the month.
The organization has said it does not expect new state funding, so it plans to close its doors by June 29, eliminating 17 jobs.
EMTEC’s executive board was able to tally enough votes to dissolve EMTEC and elect a three-member board to oversee the dissolution. Members voted through proxy ballots.
David Swenson, an EMTEC vice president, could not provide exact vote numbers, but said the organization received the votes it legally needed to close its doors.
“It went as expected, but it’s still a difficult process,” Swenson said.
He said EMTEC had a “total economic impact” of $227.8 million in fiscal year 2012 and helped create 130 jobs across Ohio, also this fiscal year. EMTEC was able to help 96 manufacturing companies in various ways, while helping six companies draw new capital and a dozen others with SBIR (small business innovation research) contracts.
“We measure our success through the success of those people we help,” Swenson said.
“Ohio Third Frontier appreciates the years of economic development contributions provided by EMTEC. However, recently our goals have not been aligned,” Katie Sabatino, spokeswoman for Ohio Department of Development, said in an email to the Dayton Daily News. “Shifting markets and competitive environments require changes that are essential to the economic health of the region. The state is committed to continuing support of the advanced materials industry through Ohio Third Frontier investments and other state programs.”
Founded in 1987 and based in Kettering, EMTEC has worked to boost companies’ development and commercialization of materials, alternative energy and other technologies.
