Staff Report
WILMINGTON — National Bank and Trust is one of the latest financial institutions to limit non-PIN transactions of its customers out of state due to issues with debit card fraud.
Earlier in May at least three local credit unions said they were taking extra security measures in response to recent spikes in debit card fraud, such as fraudulent and suspicious charges and compromised cards.
National Bank and Trust said this month it too would require customers to use their Personal Identification Number on transactions made with their debit cards in certain states outside of Ohio. Customers are being asked to use their PIN number instead of signing their name.
Customers are also asked to notify the bank if traveling out of Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana, according to National Bank and Trust’s website.
“Due to a dramatic increase in fraudulent signature based debit card transactions we have blocked all states with the exception of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky...this block applies only to signature based transactions,” according to a statement on the company’s website. “We apologize for the inconvenience but feel this is necessary to protect our debit card customers.”
National Bank and Trust has offices in Clinton, Clermont, Warren, Montgomery, Brown and Highland counties.
