WEST CHESTER TWP. — Lakota Local Schools took extra precautions after the Butler County Water and Sewer Department issued a water boil advisory at Hopewell Elementary School due to a water main break today, Feb. 7.

Precautions were taken at the building, 8300 Cox Road, since a water boil advisory does not prevent the use of water for most activities, but is instead issued as a precaution against drinking the water, district officials said.

To ensure the safety of students in grades 2-6 and staff, the district blocked all water fountains from use, had bottled water delivered to ensure fresh, drinkable water was available, changed the process for food preparation, and made menu changes that eliminated the use of additional water.

The school district also used hand sanitizer under supervision of staff as an extra precaution beyond normal hand washing procedures and asked the Butler County Health Department to inspect the school’s process for food preparation and delivering bottled water to students and staff.

“The Health Department noted we did everything correctly and even went above the standards they recommend for a water advisory situation. We feel confident that we took all the necessary steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff, ” said Principal Denise Hayes.

The Water System Maintenance Notice was issued Monday, Feb. 6, which also has affected 12 residential homes — from 8227 to 8385 — across from Hopewell Elementary on the west side of Cox Road, said Bob Leventry, director of the Butler County Water and Sewer Department.

He said the notice is expected to be lifted this evening.
