KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense says more than 20 militants have been killed and wounded during a battle with NATO-backed Afghan forces.
The ministry says the militants were traveling in two vehicles when they were attacked by Afghan troops aided by NATO airstrikes on Friday in northeastern Kunar province. No other details were provided.
More than 2,100 people — mostly militants — have been killed in insurgency-related violence in Afghanistan this year. About 8,000 people died in attacks last year — the most since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.
