About The Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors

Monday, June 04, 2007

Ohio has approximately 1,200 funeral homes and more than 3,000 licensed funeral directors and embalmers.

The Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors is charged with overseeing the industry, enforcing Ohio's funeral laws and licensing funeral homes, funeral directors, embalmers and crematories.

Extras

Members: Seven board members appointed by the governor to five-year terms. Five must be licensed embalmers and practicing funeral directors; two must come from outside the industry and represent the public.

An executive director oversees a staff of seven, including two that are charged with inspecting every funeral home and crematory statewide each year.

Annual budget: $600,000. Funds come from licensing fees, not the state's general revenue fund.
