The cast of a Tony Award-winning musical hopes to tickle area funny bones in Warren County this week.
The curtain rises on "Anything Goes" at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, March 26, to Saturday, March 28, at Kings High School, 5500 Columbia Road in Kings Mills.
English teacher and "Anything Goes" director Carrie Snyder said KHS drama students have spent 10 weeks rehearsing the Cole Porter musical, which features several well-known songs including "I Get A Kick Out of You."
"They're catchy and very jazzy," she said. "You'll leave singing the songs."
Set in the 1930s on the USS American, the musical revolves around a Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt, a pretentious social climber looking to marry off daughter Hope to handsome and wealthy fiance Sir Evelyn Oakleigh. Complicating matters, Hope still pines for ex-boyfriend Billy Crocker.
Another character, Moonface Martin is a second-rate gangster. Public Enemy Number 13 on the FBI's Most Wanted list, Martin yearns to become Public Enemy Number One.
The ship's most famous person, evangelist-turned-night-club-singer Reno Sweeney, knows everyone on the ship and seeks to play cupid to all.
Snyder said the musical's wide range of humor is sure to appeal to audiences of all ages.
"It's a kind of misadventure madcap thing happening on board," she said. "There are a lot of costume changes, disguises and comic mishaps."
Abby Liebowitz, a 16-year-old Kings High School junior playing Reno Sweeney, said the musical numbers in "Anything Goes" are "big and fun" and involve a great deal of singing and dancing.
Junior Hanna Firstenberger, 16, who plays Moonface Martin's sidekick Bonnie, said audiences will like what they see on stage.
"These characters are so cheesy and goofy and funny, everyone can relate to one of them," she said.
Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, $5 for children 12 and under and may be purchased at the door on the day of the show.
