It's said man and woman can't live on bread alone. Ann Witherspoon would argue they need a place to sit, too.

Witherspoon, in conjunction with the Turtlecreek Community Church, where she is a member, is organizing the first furniture pantry in Warren County. Much like a food pantry, the furniture drive endeavors to help needy families by supplying lightly used furniture at no charge.

"A lot of churches have clothes closets and food pantries and those are great," Witherspoon said. "But this is something unique that people still have a need for."

Witherspoon said that she and her late husband had started a similar program with great success in Colerain Twp.

"It serves a lot of purposes," Witherspoon said. "People can get rid of furniture they no longer need, the furniture is kept out of landfills, and we are able to provide furniture at no cost to people who can't afford it. Everybody wins."

For now, furniture is stored in the garage of Turtlecreek Community Church member Sue Hutzel.

"I thought it was a great idea," Hutzel said. "I don't have a car, but I have a garage so it seemed like the right fit."

For now the coffers of the furniture pantry are low, consisting of a single couch and office chair, but Witherspoon is optimistic about raising donations from church members and others in the community.

The Turtlecreek Community Church meets in the Lebanon Opry House, 114 N. Cherry St., every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Anyone interested in donating furniture can contact Witherspoon at (513) 228-0466.
