Bitter cold and snow in forecast

Staff Report

Monday, January 12, 2009

BUTLER COUNTY — A couple of weather systems plummeting temperatures and bringing several inches of snow are expected to move through Butler County later this week.

A dusting of snow fell Sunday night but there were clearing skies Monday, Jan. 12. However, another round of snow showers was expected to move through Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

"There could be an inch or two overnight," said meteorologist Myron Padgett.

Tuesday night is expected to be "much colder" with lows between five and 10 degrees, the weather service said.

Another round of snow is predicted to fall Wednesday night and into Thursday with light accumulations possible, although exact amounts are not yet forecasted, Padgett said.

Wednesday's high temperatures are expected to reach the upper 20s, then dip down to lows of about 10 degrees and a 70 percent chance of snow after midnight. The wind chill could be as low as 10 below, according to the weather service.

The rounds of snow are forecast to usher in arctic air that will send temperatures below zero Friday morning.

Temperatures Thursday and Friday are only expected to reach 10 to 15 degrees. The windchill Thursday night and Friday morning could be 15 below zero.

"It will be the coldest air of the season," Padgett said.
