Teachers at Mason High School received word over winter break that a favorite former student had died.
Michelle Moses, 21, was killed Dec. 20 in a traffic accident on Interstate 75 south of Lexington, Ky., said Mason High School Principal Dave Allen, who described her as a "well-liked and popular" student.
"It's had a really big impact on our teachers," Allen said. "They knew her pretty well. She was a really, really good kid."
Allen said Moses was involved in the National Honor Society and was on the school's cross country team, played softball and stayed involved in other various activities.
At the time of the accident, the fourth-year University of Florida elementary education major was on her way back to the area to see her parents, Garry and Inez Moses, said Carol Lehman, a Mason High science teacher who taught Moses forensics during her senior year.
Lehman said she sobbed when she heard the tragic news.
"It was just unbelievable," Lehman said "Michelle was one of the greatest kids. She was smiling all the time and she was the first person to help people."
Moses also was an excellent student who could be counted on to do the right thing "100 percent of the time," even when no one was watching, Lehman said.
She also was very close with her parents and brother, Ben, who also attended the University of Florida, Lehman said.
"My heart just broke for the Moses family," she said. "It just leaves a huge sadness in your heart. From our entire community, our heartfelt prayers go out to them."
Lehman said Moses volunteered for Habitat for Humanity while in Florida, and her parents have set up a fund with the organization to allow people to make donations in their daughter's memory.
