Comment: What kind of coaster do you think it will be?
Game: Can you match the Kings Island ride to its sign?
Friday, June 27, 2008
It's no secret that Kings Island is building a ride, but the amusement park's staff has not talked about what kind of ride they intend to open in 2009.
Park visitors can see that a ride is under construction in the River Town area of the park, to the right of the Eiffel Tower and near The Beast roller coaster.
Coaster fans and other ride enthusiasts posting their comments on kicentral.com are speculating, based on the dimensions of the site, but Kings Island spokesman Don Helbig isn't giving away a thing.
"All I can say is this new ride will be the most exciting new attraction in the 36-year history of the park," Helbig said Friday, June 27.
Kicentral.com, a fan Web site, has published photos of the construction progress beginning in April.
Helbig says part of the "fun" is all the speculation surrounding the new ride. Industry expert Dennis Spiegel, who was part of the original team that built Kings Island, says the footprint of the new ride tells him Bolliger & Mabillard is building it and it's either a hyper or a dive coaster, but he's fairly certain he knows what's being built.
"It has the water reservoir built into it and that's what leads us to believe it's a dive coaster," Spiegel said. "Whether it's A or B it's still a great ride, with basically the same thrills, one you get wet on and one you don't."
Spiegel said if it's a dive coaster, it would be like the Griffon ride at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. Probable price tag? A cool $15 million.
The Griffon is the first floorless dive coaster, that shoots riders up 205 feet and hurls them down at a 90 degree angle, at 75 m.p.h.. There are two Immelman or inverse loops.
The last new ride at Kings Island, Fire Hawk, flew into town in 2007 from Geauga Lake in Aurora, near Cleveland. The amusement park owner, Cedar Fair, spent $7.5 million to bring Fire Hawk to Kings Island.

Here's part of the construction plans filed with the city of Mason for a new ride at Kings Island that amusement park officials said they will not discuss.

It is sad when Americans are trashing one another from just a simple question about a roller coaster ride!! If you don’t like KI, then don’t go. There is NO need in all the trash talk. Grow up! I know that my family ENJOY going to KI. It is a small price to pay for a whole Summer of fun. Pack a cooler for the day, fill up the gas tank and go! Think about it! As for me and my family, we look forward to going to KI and riding the new ride this year :)

Kings Island is the best, and cheapest of all the major theme parks in the United States. Maybe they should double or triple the cost of admission to keep all the miserable whining garbage out of the park.

i talked to one of the employees on the train, and he said it would be 300+ feet high, have 3 inverts and splashes you. he said it would be one of the top 5 roller coasters in the world. PS: drop tower is about 300 feet so imagine a roller coaster dropping from that high

I KNOW WHAT ROLLER COATSER IT WILL BE!! I’M 100% positive it’s a coaster just like Millinium Force at Cedar Point My sources say it’s supposed to go Under the beast back near the side of Tomb Riader or Now The Crypt and It’s supposed to go near the racer/Fire Hawk Please if you want to know any more info e-mail me at tyle792@aol.com

Here is what I think:
The new coaster will be a B & M hyper coaster (Behemoth, Nitro, Raging Bull)and dive at the end for splash down like Griffon (a Busch Gardens B & M coaster).
It will go out into the woods between the Beast and the Railroad/White Water Canyon.
My beliefs are based on several park visits this season, conversations with many park employees, and research online concerning the amusement park business and coaster design business.
B&M and KI - it will be a great match!

Any local who doesn’t buy the season pass, its less than $100, doesn’t understand value. The swimming area alone is worth that. Even at minimum wage, that is about 20 hours of work for a summer of fun. Get real crybabies.

I’d like to see another top thrill dragster like in Cedar Point, but my guess is like the Griffin and Busch Gardens.

Given the small area of the construction site, it may not even be a roller coaster. I think it’s great that KI has not yet announced what the ride will be. This way, all the speculation that is going on is building interest and excitement about it. Which will increase news coverage & attendance when it is finally open.

Actually, yes part of SOB DID collapse during high winds while it was under construction. I remember seeing it on the news. And yes, some of you seriously need to grow up and stop whining. If you can’t post serious comments about the article, then don’t post anything. It asked what you thought the new coaster was going to be. It didn’t ask you to give your thoughts about KI ticket prices. I think the coaster is going to be a hyper coaster that ends with a dive into a splashdown.

If its like the Griffin @ Busch Gardens in Virgina that would be great. And if you people pay full admission price your just dumb. There are so many ways to get coupons and pay cheaper admission its ridiculous. I love Kings Island and Cedar point. Ohio is the best for roller coasters. If I had one complaint it would be the Top Gun ride. Terrible! Get rid of it and put a ride like the Raptor @ Cedar Point.

I cannot believe the ignorance of the people who post these comments. First, like it said before Son of Beast did not fall over; an unforeseen error in track design caused part of the track to buckle. Second, Drop Zone did not cut off anyone’s legs. Third, light rail, I am not even going to touch that one. Fourth, King’s Island has to make a profit just like anyone. The “high” admission price is because of a low attendance rate. Also, there is a thing called grammar, learn it and use it.

I just hope that it doesn’t fall over when the wind blows like Son of the Beast. It would also be good if it doesn’t cut people’s feet off like the drop zone. I will let all you fellas try it out and if none of you perish or become maimed then perhaps I will try it. We’ll see.

All you complaining about money, shut up! The public library is free, go there and stay away from KI then. I choose to spend my entertainment dollars on things such as riding a new coaster, which I hope is like the one at Busch Gardens by the way. The nerve of Cedar Fair to try and turn a profit. Shame on them!

Sounds like comments from people who probably smoke and waste over $2000 a year while killing themselves and annoying others with the stink they create and the litter they leave everywhere, even when others are watching. A season pass is well worth it if you go more than twice and if the weather is not too hot, it’s a great place to be away from computers and phones. Lighten up folks and enjoy the life you have - if you knew the future, God would have to make you a lot tougher than you are!

i personally can’t wait for the new ride to be put in. i just went to king’s island last week, and saw the construction site. it’s a pretty small area to put a ride in, especially if it’s a roller coaster! king’s island needs some new roller coasters. they need to put another stand-up coaster in. i like delerium, the ride that replaced the king cobra, but i was very pissed when i found out that king’s island was taking out the king cobra. they need to put in a HUGE, LONG coaster!!!

KI expensive? So is golf, cable TV, mistresses, beer, and everything else. Buy a season pass. Go twice and your even.
Light rail? hahahahahahahahahhahahaha
Yeh I’m going to ride light rail. It costs me about 15-20 in gas to get there. What do you LR zealots think my light rail ticket for 4 is going to cost….and I still have to drive to a rail head.

An official there at KI said that it will toss you upside down several times until your wallet has fallen out of your pocket and into a net below. Luckily, they only charge to let you park your car. They haven’t figured out a way to charge you to let you leave yet. I’m sure they will find a way to do that.
