HAMILTON — Two pit bulls have been found dead and a third has been found wounded in a trash can, according to officials at the Animal Friends Humane Society in Trenton.

Officers were called at around 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, to the 100 block of Washington Street to pick up dead dogs in an alley. Officers discovered two dead pit bulls that were heavily decomposed, but then found an injured pit bull inside a trash can with the lid closed on it, said Julie Holmes, Butler County's chief dog warden.

The 1-year-old dog, now named Grace, shows signs of being involved in a dog fight and has a large infected area from wounds on its neck, Holmes said. It is unclear if Grace suffered the injuries from an organized dog fight, but the evidence at least shows neglect, Holmes said.

Grace is timid, but passed temperament tests. Holmes said she should be up for adoption by next week.

Humane society officials aren't sure if the dead dogs are related to Grace being found in the trash can.

The humane society recently proposed a spay/neuter ordinance to the city of Hamilton because of an apparent pit bull overpopulation problem.
