SMART building $30M plant to cut future C02 emissions

Facility will use own 'green' steam power for all production

HAMILTON — SMART Papers has started construction on a $30 million high-efficiency energy facility that company officials said will allow it to produce all of its products using its own "green" steam power.

The facility will not require new employees, but the company will add 50 positions, effective immediately, as the result of a recent acquisition of seven premium writing paper brands from Montreal-based Domtar Corp.

"We're going to be the only (paper producer) that we know of that will be completely carbon neutral by producing our own power through steam," said Dan Mahue, president and chief operating officer of SMART. "It's a very unique environmental position we are going to put ourselves in when it's completed in 2009."

The facility will be co-generation, meaning it will use biomass fuel produced from yard waste, industrial wood and fiber waste.

The company buys the fuel commercially, but will consider acquiring some of it locally after the system is completed, Mahue said.

As a result, the company will cease to emit carbon dioxide — the number one greenhouse gas — since biomass uses carbon that was recently released into the atmosphere to create power, he said.

Construction of the 40-megawatt system has already begun in SMART's B Street facility parking lot. Mahue said the company will operate six turbines and three condensers, as well as a cooling tower and auxiliary equipment.

Company officials said they expect to begin producing 100 percent of their own power after construction is completed in early 2009, with all products being produced fossil fuel-free by the end of that year. SMART plans to begin selling its excess power made in the facility in 2010, Mahue said.

Previously, SMART produced a large portion of its own power and purchased the rest from Duke Energy Ohio, Mahue said.

SMART's investment in the power facility comes after the Ohio legislature passed a law requiring that up to 12.5 percent of the state's electricity consumption come from renewable sources by 2025. Under the law, half of that must be generated within Ohio.

"This is a major environmental advance in paper-making — we have set a new standard for environmentally responsible printing papers," said Tim Needham, SMART Papers chairman. "The production of these papers will leave the lightest environmental footprint of any premium coated or uncoated printing paper produced in North America."

Honeywell International supplied the power system. Dayton-based Shook Construction will complete the building work, Mahue said.

Yes this sounds fine but I heard the exact same words from the officials at Sorg Paper Company in 1999 Located in Middletown and look where they went. Closed in May of 2000. All I can say is Do Not Belive the Corporate Officials until it happens

To Paula Williams: I have to agree with John Doe regarding your lack of punctuation, etc. Should you post future comments, please have someone with at least half-a-brain proof and correct your product. Illiterate hillbillies have no credibility, so please keep your ignorant comments to yourself. Oh, Have a Nice Day!

Cease to emit CO2? Not really. They are just getting credit for not burning regular fuel sources. Environmental responsibility? They care about making money and avoiding taxes. This environmental emergency gimmick is getting old. Energy is expensive, and it only makes sense to conserve where practical to cut costs. Carbon footprint? I don’t care.

Champion Papers has always been a part of my family. My Grandfather My father and my Uncles retired and made a living working there. It was a shame what happen when Smart Paper took over But they did what had to be done at the time at least they are staying and keeping the plant going. Securing the jobs for the people left and for Hamilton.

Nice that Smart Papers is thinking “green” and about the future. Sure would be nice if their employees could se some “green” in their wallets and think about their own futures. Does anybody realize how long their employees have worked without raises? Oh, I am sure their VP’s have had nice raises but what about the other 545 people who works there?

WELL THATS GOOD BUT WHAT ABOUT THE EMPLOYEES RAISES AND BETTER BENFITS AND IT MAY MAKE THE CITY HAPPY THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE HAPPY IS IT PUTS MONEY IN THERE POCKETS NOT THE EMPLOYEES.

ALSO ITS PRETTY GOOD FOR A COMPANY THAT IS BANKRUPT WHERE IS THE MONEY REALLY COMING FROM .

John, it is sad that a lot of good people were let go when Smart Paper took over. However, it was a necessary business decision. Champion had very high costs. So, to make it a profitable investment Smart Paper had to trim costs. This is just part of business these days. It happens at every company, every year. It is part of progress. I’m sure stage coach drivers were upset when technology put them out of business too, but none of us are complaining about it.
