Boehner: McCain solid to win presidency

The longer Clinton and Obama fight for party nod, 'that's fine with me,' said U.S. House minority leader.

President Bush is excited about his daughter's wedding, and it's "pretty cool" to land on the White House lawn in an airplane, said U.S. Rep. John Boehner.

The Republican House Minority Leader of West Chester Twp., who represents the 8th Congressional District, opened his speech with such remarks at the Lincoln Day Dinner Friday, May 9, at the Savannah Center on Chappell Crossing Boulevard.

Nearly 600 people attended the reception, dinner and auction, which is the Butler County GOP's largest annual fundraiser. The event's theme — "An evening of presidential politics, star, power and unity" — was conveyed by Boehner, who received two standing ovations.

Boehner voiced his support for likely GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, who "is the last man standing," and urged those in attendance to identify and encourage uncommitted voters from either party to cast a ballot in November.

"Ohio was critical in the 2004 and 2000 elections, it will be again in the 2008 election," he said.

The battle for the Democratic nomination between U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is only serving to help McCain, he said.

"If you look at the damage they're doing to each other, it's serious. The longer they fight ... that's fine with me," Boehner said. "McCain is in a solid position to win this year's election."
