Local author aims to renew spirit in busy women
Thursday, May 08, 2008
Jennifer King knows a thing or two about staying busy.
As a teenager, the Liberty Twp. woman competed in the Olympic Trials for synchronized swimming and worked as a model in Chicago, New York, Paris and Tokyo. In her 20s, she earned a degree in mechanical engineering, married Brian and started a family.

Now 34 and the mother of three sons — Tyler, 9; Matthew, 7, and Brysen, 5 — King is pouring her faith, life experiences and writing talent into "The One Year Mini For Busy Women," a daily devotional for women of all ages.
Each entry is preceded by a verse from scripture and is geared toward helping people who find themselves "pulled in all directions" by life, King said. "I think we either feel flustered and crazy all the time from all of those things pulling at us, or we intentionally slow down and find something that sets our heart at peace," she said.
Doing so gives people the ability to gain perspective and enjoy what they are doing, King said.
"I wrote what I needed to hear myself, and so, if I needed to hear it and these sort of things helped me in my daily life, it was probably something worth sharing," she said.
Liberty Twp. resident Amber Clay's busy life includes being a small business owner, church youth leader, fitness instructor and mother of three young children.
Clay said King's "fresh, wonderful perspective" is a welcome reprieve when she's having a tough day.
"In five minutes, you can renew your spirit," Clay said. "She certainly understands the issues that we all face in trying to manage the busyness of life, and I think the book reflects that."
Tyndale House Publishers recruited King to write the book, part of its "One Year" brand. She churned it out between May and October 2006, usually penning several days worth of entries each day and finishing a month before deadline.
King said she believes writing "The One Year Mini for Busy Women" is one of the main reasons she was created.
"I think that with me being able to write, that I enjoy the role of being a mom and wife much more than when I didn't have that in my life. It's definitely enriched my life in every aspect.
"When you find that passion for which you were created it really makes your soul sing. It's like the world goes from black and white to color."
A limited number of autographed copies of "The One Year Mini For Busy Women" are available at Barnes & Noble, 9455 Civic Centre Blvd., West Chester Twp. For more information about Jennifer King, visit jennifersgardens.com.
