A year after Miami University was founded in 1809, the Village of Oxford was laid out and the first residents bought their lots. The village was incorporated by 1830, with a population of over 700. The village adopted a charter government in 1961. Oxford has grown in both population and geographical area over the last few decades, and it is now a city.

Miami University, named for the Miami Indian tribe that once lived in the region, is the second-oldest liberal arts college in Ohio. The university now instructs approximately 14,000 undergraduate students. Miami is known for W.H. McGuffeyÕs famous McGuffey Readers, which were used in U.S. schools for over a century. Former U.S. President Benjamin Harrison is one of MiamiÕs most notable graduates.
